opinions needed...

So Matt and I have been on this house high... We got talking one day about how cool it would be to have a house and now we can't get it out of our minds.  We went on the search today for all the houses that had for sale signs on them (we were inspired by some friends ;) hahah).  Side note- if you are not ready to buy, don't look.  I want a house so bad now but I know there is a lot more to it than just that.  We are trying weighing pros and cons and trying to figure out the rest of our lives. We have been talking to lots of people and would love your insight as well.  What do you think?  Any suggestions?  Help... we are marking on new territory here and its a happy/scary moment.  We know we are going to be here for a few years at least- 3 or more, and I kinda feel like if we spent money on a house then we are not just wasting money renting something that will never be our own.  We are really liking this one house too... seriously don't go looking if you can buy one right away lol Anyway like I said we would love any input you have!  This is mostly just a dream right now, but one day it will happen.  Yup. One day! :)
Thanks!

sincerely,
Over her head

  1. I'd say hold off. It's super fun to look--don't I know it. But, scary stuff buying houses that you end up not being able to pay for. Stressful, marriage stressful, money stressful, feeling in the bottom of your gut stressful. When you are looking at payments, tack on an additional $300 at least a month--there are always things that come up, ESPECIALLY in the first year. 'Oh crap, now we have a lawn? We have to buy a lawn mower.' 'Oh crap, the furnace is old in this 30 year old house and we have to buy a new one or we won't have heat...there goes $2000', 'Oh man, I hate this kitchen with my WHOLE SOUL and can't spend one more minute in here is we don't re-do...' You get the idea. Sometimes buying is a good idea, and maybe in Rexburg that's the case, but having been through this now a time or two, I would wait--no matter how badly you want to buy. Look into renting a house--I think maybe it's the house that you like, not necessarily the purchasing and commitment! Save up for a downpayment and then when you are more permanent--like GRADUATED--you will be in the perfect position to get just what you want. How awful would it be if you or Matt never graduated cuz you couldn't scrap together enough money to cover the mortgage and so you just kept working forever cuz you were stuck. (Hello, can you say a certain Uncle of ours?) Don't want to burst your bubble, but...I would wait!
